Beginnings

The interns are all back from Christmas vacation, the neighborhood schools are in session again (no snow days here!), and most of our programs are beginning this week.

Despite the past few weeks of no "organized" activities on the premises, I've noticed that the basketball court has been a frequent gathering place. Teens to little tykes have been shooting hoops or riding their bikes or just hanging out and watching the action.

That's a good thing.

People are our business, and without people, we might as well close down tomorrow.

Our Kids Klub lesson tonight is the Genesis account of creation, and I've been reminded of the elementary truth that people are God's business. The first 25 verses of Scripture are silent about people, but from Genesis 1:26 until Revelation 22:21, the story of humanity and the God who created and redeemed them for His glory saturates the text.

I love how this portion of James Weldon Johnson's The Creation portrays the forming of the first man:

Up from the bed of the river
God scooped the clay;
And by the bank of the river
He kneeled Him down;
And there the great God Almighty
Who lit the sun and fixed it in the sky,
Who flung the stars to the most far corner of the night,
Who rounded the earth in the middle of His hand;
This Great God,

but to people.
