Last Wednesday night, Aim Right downtown hosted its Fall Festival. The school across the street was also hosting a "Trunk or Treat" event, and thus many of our attendees came dressed in costume. The District Phx donated 180 hot dogs and buns and also provided volunteers to man the grill and serve food. What a blessing! Our intern Aleisha did a wonderful job of coordinating the event for us. Many of our teens helped with games and face painting. Ro was our emcee, playing music and announcing the winners of cakes in our Cake Walk.
A special treat was seeing some folks we had not seen in a while, like past Aim Right'ers who are now twenty-somethings and raising families, as well as other people we've connected with through the years but do not see often. At the end of the night, when most of the guests had left, I noticed a mom and her children still sitting on the front steps. I knew the family and assumed they had probably walked to Aim Right. When I asked the teenaged son if they would like a ride home, he replied, "No, my mom is still talking to her friend," as he gestured to a car parked along the street. As I think now about that encounter, I am glad they felt comfortable staying and sitting and visiting. We want Aim Right to be a place of welcome and safety.
